Theatre vs. Film

While he enjoys both screen and stage work, Maake KaNcube revealed that theatre holds a particularly special place in his heart.

You know, I would say theatre, but they are all my babies,” he said. He went on to compare film acting to “microwave cooking” for its fast-paced nature, while theatre, in contrast, is like “a slow-cooked pot” that allows a performance to develop with depth and maturity.

He emphasized that theatre provides actors with the technique and discipline that often distinguishes them from those who start solely in film. Referencing Hollywood actor Denzel Washington, he said, “Real acting is in the theatre.”

The Royalties Debate

In addition to promoting the play Master Harold and the Boys, Maake KaNcube addressed the ongoing issue of royalties in South Africa’s television industry. The topic has gained traction amid growing concerns raised by fellow industry veterans like Nandi Nyembe.

While he has typically stayed out of public debates, Maake KaNcube was candid: “We should be getting royalties. One is still having to fight for them and to get them.”

His words have reignited conversations about fair compensation and the need for greater structural support for long-serving performers in the entertainment industry.
