Former Big Brother Mzansi star and media personality Thato Mokoena has opened up about the collapse of her marriage to Brandon “Gash1” Mthombeni, shedding light on the circumstances that ultimately led to their separation.
Just months after publicly announcing their split, Mokoena addressed the end of the relationship in a candid YouTube video, revealing that she remains firm in her decision despite efforts from her former husband and his family to save the marriage.
The reality television star explained that for the first few years, their relationship was built on mutual commitment, compromise and a shared willingness to make things work. However, she said the marriage began facing difficulties during its third year when certain boundaries she had clearly established were crossed.
Without disclosing specific details, Mokoena said the breakdown stemmed from a situation involving a non-negotiable issue that she was unwilling to compromise on.
“He literally wanted me to negotiate on something that I told him was non-negotiable, and I’m not going to do that,” she said.

“To this day, I respect that. The humility to say ‘we are here to reconcile’, even though I said no, I’m not reconciling,” she explained.
Throughout the video, Mokoena reflected on the relationship with a sense of appreciation for the effort both parties invested over the years. She acknowledged that successful relationships require both people to consistently choose one another and work through challenges together.
“I’m glad I was in a relationship with somebody who was willing to be and do. We were two people willing to be and do, and we did, and we tried until he didn’t,” she said.
