South African music icon Oskido has expressed heartfelt gratitude after receiving one of the country’s highest civilian honours, recognising his decades-long contribution to the music industry.
The legendary DJ, producer and entrepreneur was recently awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver by President Cyril Ramaphosa during the National Orders Investiture Ceremony held on 19 May 2026.

More than a week after receiving the prestigious recognition, Oskido took to social media to reflect on the milestone and thank those who have supported him throughout his remarkable career.
“To God be the glory. 🙏🏽 Thank you for walking this journey with me. This honour belongs to all of us,” he wrote.
The award acknowledges Oskido’s immense impact on South African music, not only as a performer and producer but also as a mentor who has opened doors for countless young artists over the years.
According to the official citation, he was recognised “for creating opportunities for young musicians as an extension of his own success as a DJ, record producer, entrepreneur and kwaito pioneer.”

Widely regarded as one of the architects of modern South African music, Oskido played a pivotal role in the rise of kwaito during the 1990s, helping transform the genre into a cultural movement that gave voice to a new generation of South Africans.
Beyond his own success behind the decks, he became instrumental in developing talent through Kalawa Jazmee Records, one of the most influential record labels in the country’s music history.
Through the label, Oskido helped launch and nurture the careers of several major stars, including Mafikizolo, Boom Shaka and Black Coffee, among many others.
His influence extends beyond kwaito, with Oskido playing an important role in supporting the evolution of house music, afro-tech and amapiano, while continuously championing emerging talent and adapting to changing musical trends.
Following the investiture ceremony, Oskido made it clear that he viewed the honour as a collective achievement rather than an individual one. He dedicated the recognition to fellow pioneers, collaborators and industry figures who helped shape the foundation of South Africa’s music landscape.
For many fans and industry peers, the award serves as fitting recognition for a career that has spanned more than three decades and left an undeniable mark on South African culture.
As tributes continue to pour in, Oskido’s latest achievement stands as a celebration not only of his personal success but also of his enduring commitment to uplifting artists, preserving South African musical heritage and inspiring future generations.
