Former reality TV personality and YouTuber Mel Viljoen has issued a public apology to South Africans following her return from the United States, where she and her husband have been facing legal and immigration-related challenges.

Mel, who arrived back in South Africa on Wednesday, 27 May, spoke openly in an interview with Netwerk24, where she reflected on past comments she and her husband, Peet Viljoen, had made about the country and its people.

In her apology, she admitted that their remarks were inappropriate and driven by arrogance.

“I want to say I’m terribly sorry for what we said about the people of South Africa. I’m sorry that I insulted the people of our country in such a way. We were just arrogant, and arrogance leads to a fall,” she said.

Mel explained that she chose to keep a low profile upon her arrival back in the country, saying she needed time to reflect and adjust after a difficult period overseas.

She also revealed that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, arranged and covered her flight back to South Africa following her release.

While Mel has returned home, she confirmed that her husband remains in detention in the United States, with his next legal update expected on 12 June. She expressed emotional strain over the separation, saying the experience has been painful for both of them.

“He really doesn’t deserve the global embarrassment of stealing. But I believe it was necessary to fall, so that people could see the people in us,” she said.

Looking ahead, Mel said she hopes Peet will eventually clear his name and rebuild his professional life as a legal practitioner once the matter is resolved.

She also shared her intention to return to the beauty industry, where she previously worked in nail and cosmetic services before entering reality television.

Addressing the circumstances that led to her arrest in March, Mel maintained that there was a misunderstanding involving her bank card and technical issues with payment systems, which she believes contributed to the situation escalating unexpectedly.

As she settles back into life in South Africa, Mel says she is focused on rebuilding and moving forward after what she described as a deeply challenging experience abroad.
