South African superstar Tyla has found herself at the centre of a fresh social media debate after promotional photos with American rapper Future sparked accusations of double standards from some online users.

The Grammy-winning singer recently joined forces with Future on a FIFA Sound collaboration connected to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. As part of the promotional campaign, several images of the two artists surfaced online, generating excitement among fans ahead of the release.

However, one particular photo quickly became a talking point after users noticed Future resting his arm on Tyla’s shoulder.

The image prompted comparisons to a previous viral moment involving a male South African fan who reportedly asked Tyla for permission to pose with his arm around her while taking a photo. At the time, the singer declined the request, a decision that sparked discussions about personal boundaries, consent and celebrity interactions with fans.

Following the release of the new promotional images, some critics questioned why a similar gesture appeared acceptable in one situation but not the other.

“This is how Americans are allowed to touch Tyla; the South Africans can’t get close,” one user wrote online.

Another commented, “She let Future put his hand over her, but she said no to the other guy? Being broke is painful.”

Others echoed similar sentiments, with some revisiting the earlier fan encounter and suggesting the contrasting images sent mixed signals.

At the same time, many supporters defended Tyla, arguing that the two situations are fundamentally different. They pointed out that individuals have the right to set boundaries differently depending on the context, relationship and level of comfort involved.

Supporters also noted that consent is not a blanket rule that must apply identically in every circumstance. Being comfortable with a colleague, friend or collaborator does not automatically mean someone is obligated to allow the same level of physical contact from strangers or fans.

The debate has since expanded into a broader conversation about personal autonomy, celebrity-fan relationships and the importance of respecting boundaries regardless of a person’s public profile.

Neither Tyla nor Future has publicly addressed the online discussion, with attention remaining focused on their collaboration and the growing anticipation surrounding their FIFA-linked project.
