Justice Minister condemns Lenasia court killing, security to be beefed up! The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development has denounced the killing of 27-year-old Ashwin Mouwers, a key witness in a high-profile murder case, as a heinous and deplorable act.
Mouwers, who hailed from Eldorado Park, was shot dead on Tuesday, days before he was set to testify in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court.
This tragic incident has highlighted significant security vulnerabilities within the justice system, prompting urgent measures to ensure the safety of witnesses and other court users.
A Heinous Act
Mouwers was scheduled to testify alongside another witness regarding a murder committed in 2021. His murder is believed to be an orchestrated hit aimed at silencing critical testimony in the case.
In a statement, the Department of Justice strongly condemned the killing, emphasizing the importance of protecting individuals who come forward to assist the courts in delivering justice.
“This heinous act is an attack on the core principles of justice and the rule of law. Witnesses play an essential role in ensuring accountability, and such actions undermine the integrity of our judicial processes,” the department stated.
Heightened Security Measures
In response to this security breach, Justice Minister Mamoloko Kubayi has announced immediate steps to enhance safety measures for high-risk court cases.
“The security breach violates the core of court administration. Courts are meant to be safe spaces where justice is sought and upheld,” said Kubayi.
The department, in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the South African Police Service (SAPS), is rolling out an integrated security plan and conducting comprehensive threat and risk assessments.
“These measures are aimed at safeguarding witnesses, court officials, and the public, restoring confidence in the safety of our justice system,” Kubayi added.
Ensuring Continuity and Support
Despite the tragedy, operations at the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court have continued as usual. Minister Kubayi praised the swift actions of the police in ensuring no further harm occurred within the court premises.
In addition, the department has arranged psychological support services for court staff and others affected by the traumatic incident. “The emotional well-being of those involved in the justice system is crucial, and we are committed to addressing the impact of this tragedy on all affected,” Kubayi said.
Public Assistance and Collective Responsibility
The Justice Department has urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist the SAPS in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators of this crime.
“Protecting and strengthening our justice system is a collective responsibility. Together, we must uphold the rule of law and resolve disputes within the framework of the Constitution,” the department emphasized.
The department also called for renewed efforts to support witnesses, as their testimony is critical to the success of the judicial process.
Ongoing Manhunt
The SAPS is conducting a manhunt for the suspects involved in the killing. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that the incident is being investigated as a targeted hit.
“Our officers are working tirelessly to trace those responsible for this brazen attack. We are appealing to anyone with information to come forward to aid in the investigation,” Masondo said.
The police remain committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensuring the safety of other witnesses involved in the case.
A Call for Reform
The killing of Ashwin Mouwers underscores the urgent need for reforms within the justice system to address security challenges. Witnesses in high-profile cases are often targeted, highlighting a systemic issue that requires immediate attention.
Minister Kubayi reiterated the department’s commitment to implementing robust security protocols and fostering public trust in the justice system.
“This tragedy is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who stand for truth and justice. We must work collectively to protect them and ensure that such acts of violence do not deter others from seeking justice,” she concluded.
The investigation into Mouwers’ murder continues, with law enforcement agencies vowing to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice.
