The City of Johannesburg is offering free electricity to some of the metro’s most vulnerable households.
Qualifying families could receive up to 120 kilowatts of electricity each month, subject to approval of their applications.
The city introduced what it calls the Free Basic Electricity Programme to improve access to energy to some of its most vulnerable residents.

The City of Johannesburg is urging eligible residents to apply for its Free Basic Electricity Programme, which offers up to 120 kW of free electricity per month.
The initiative is limited to pensioners, child-headed households, people living with disabilities, and individuals earning less than R7,800 per month.
Applicants must submit their South African ID, prepaid electricity meter number, proof of income, and other required documents.
Successful applicants will undergo a vulnerability index assessment to determine the amount of free electricity they will receive, with a maximum allocation of 120 kW.
“We are also aware that some residents who registered with City Power since the campaign’s inception over a month ago have not yet received their allocations. The delay is due to, among others, outstanding documentation and ongoing verification processes conducted by City Power and the social development department.
“We urge all affected customers to visit our Service Delivery Centres (SDCs) with the required documents to finalise their registration and verification process to enable allocation of free electricity. City Power has made customer agents available to contact those affected and visit others to collect the outstanding details”, said Environment and Infrastructure Development MMC Jack Sekwaila.
Johannesburg City Power has also expanded the programme to include Eskom-supplied areas such as Diepsloot, Orange Farm and Ivory Park.
“In some of these areas, we are working closely with Eskom to ensure that qualifying households are included in the free basic electricity programme. Eskom bills the city for the FBE allocation to its deserving customers in the City of Johannesburg,” added Sekwaila.
