Author and media personality Rachel Kolisi has announced that she will no longer be attending this weekend’s Kingsmead Book Fair as she continues to recover following recent surgery.

Kolisi shared the update on Instagram, explaining that her recovery process has made it impossible for her to participate in the annual literary event.

“Unfortunately, due to unforeseen surgery and needing time to recover, I will no longer be able to attend the @kingsmeadbf. Wishing the Kingsmead team and all the incredible authors participating all the best for the festival this weekend,” she wrote.

The announcement follows a recent post in which Kolisi revealed she had been admitted to hospital. At the time, she shared photos from her hospital bed, including visits from close friends and family members who came to support her during her stay. Despite her admission, she reassured followers that she was doing okay, though her latest update suggests a longer recovery period than initially expected.

Her earlier post carried a more light-hearted tone as she reflected on the experience, writing: “Had a few ideas for the caption of this one! Took @fallingforward__ a little too seriously. POV: when you carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. Nothing like morphine and friendship. Doctors said, ‘Take a load off.’ I got competitive.”

Kolisi had been scheduled to appear at the 14th annual Kingsmead Book Fair, hosted by Kingsmead College in partnership with Standard Bank Wealth and Investment, Exclusive Books and media partner HOT 102.7. The event celebrates literature through author talks, discussions and storytelling sessions, bringing together writers and readers from across South Africa.

Her appearance was particularly anticipated as it comes shortly after the release of her memoir, Falling Forward, in which she reflects on deeply personal experiences and the lessons she has learned through various life challenges.

Supporters and fellow authors have since flooded her social media with messages wishing her a smooth and speedy recovery, as fans expressed disappointment at not seeing her at the event but understanding of her need to prioritise her health.
