Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi is expected to host a breakfast on Friday morning to honour the province’s top performing matric learners. The province achieved an 82.8% pass rate which is a one percentage point decline from 2020.

Gauteng also produced more than 47 000 distinctions. Tshwane South in Pretoria was the best performing district with an 89.3 pass rate.

On Thursday night, Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced that the matric class of 2021 achieved a 76.4% – a slight improvement of point-two of a percent over the previous year. Caleb Bessit from St Barnabas College in Randburg and Abonile Nkonjane from Volsoorus Comprehensive Secondary School are among the top 20 from the class of 2021.

“To be honest, this was a complete surprise to me. I knew I did well but not this well. I feel very special, it feels so unreal. Knowing that we are part of that elite group makes us feel like we can do anything. I’m planning on studying computer science and applied mathematics at UCT.”

“I am grateful for what the Department of Education has done for me and it’s going to be memorable. My plans for this year, I would like to study electrical engineering.
