South Africa has deployed almost 3,000 soldiers

South Africa’s military to be redesigned for the 21st Century

South Africa has deployed almost 3,000 soldiers to conflict-ridden eastern DRC. Thousands of people have fled the east of the country as M23 rebels take key towns.

It’s believed they are fast approaching the North Kivu capital of Goma.

SANDF troops to form part of security detail for BRICS Summit

Rwanda is accused of supporting the rebels, sparking fears of a wider regional conflict. The SANDF will work alongside DRC security forces to fight the insurgents.

It’s part of SADC’s military intervention in the country. The Presidency says the operation will cost over R2-billion.
