City needs R10 billion to fix Johannesburg hostels! The Johannesburg Department of Human Settlements estimates that R10 billion is needed to refurbish 13 hostels across the city.
Madala Hostel in Critical Condition
MMC Mlungisi Mabaso highlighted the Madala hostel in Alexandra as the oldest and one of the most severely affected. The building suffers from aging infrastructure, and a failing sewerage system has caused flooding in its courtyard.

Abandoned Renewal Plans
The hostel was scheduled for repairs between 2001 and 2008 under the Alex Renewal Programme, but those upgrades never took place, leaving residents in deteriorating conditions for decades.
Residents Raise Concerns
Resident Nduduzo Ngubane said city officials previously claimed ignorance of the situation.
“We have now met with the city officials. We took them to view the problems that we have, and they said they will now attend to these…”
Residents now await action following the city’s renewed awareness of the crisis.
