The mother of former Miss SA finalist Chidimma Adetshina, who is accused of identity fraud, wants her bail conditions to be relaxed.

The 46-year-old Anabela Rungo appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates Court again on Thursday on charges of identity fraud and the violation of the Immigration Act.

Rungo was arrested in September last year, shortly after Adetshina’s entry into the beauty pageant gained widespread attention on social media.

On Thursday morning, a new State prosecutor was appointed to the case. The new prosecutor asked for the case to be postponed for the State to properly prepare.

The case will resume on 14 May for the magistrate to determine whether the bail conditions can be relaxed.

Independent immigration law specialist, Stefanie De Saude Darbandi, said that Rungo’s appearance in court would deal with the criminal charges and not her immigration status.

“If a person is convicted of certain serious offences, especially those involving fraud, it can affect their immigration status. But there are still legal remedies available, and every case is considered on its own facts.”
