Broad daylight robbery in Carletonville CBD sparks public safety concerns! A brazen business robbery in broad daylight has raised alarm among residents and workers in the Carletonville CBD, following an incident at the MTN store on Gold Street on Thursday, June 27.
The robbery, which occurred just after 10:00 in the morning, saw unsuspecting customers and store employees held at gunpoint by a group of four suspects — three men and one woman.
The incident has reignited concerns about safety in the busy shopping district, where foot traffic remains high throughout the day.
Broad daylight robbery
Police say the robbers entered the shop pretending to be customers before drawing firearms and forcing everyone inside to lie down.
While one employee managed to press a panic button, the criminals managed to deceive the first responding security officer by having the woman pose as the store manager.
The officer soon discovered the truth when he checked further into the shop and found terrified customers and staff tied up on the floor.
Before fleeing, the suspects overpowered another CPI officer and made off with the guards’ firearms, as well as mobile phones stolen from those in the store.
Bystanders alerted police.
This latest robbery has intensified fears that violent crime in the CBD is escalating, even during daytime hours when families and workers are going about their daily business.
Local police have urged both businesses and shoppers to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity. Authorities are also appealing to anyone with information about the suspects — who reportedly spoke isiZulu and Setswana — to come forward.
