South African music icon Black Coffee, whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, is still celebrating the overwhelming success of his landmark performance at London’s The O2 Arena, where he delivered one of the most ambitious shows of his career.
The Grammy Award-winning DJ headlined a sold-out three-hour Afropolitan House set on Friday, 22 May, blending electronic music with live orchestral arrangements, a choir, and several surprise guest appearances — including global superstar Alicia Keys.

Taking to Instagram days after the performance, Black Coffee expressed gratitude to fans who filled the arena and helped bring his vision to life.
“This past Friday has left me speechless. Every small detail put together created an absolute dream, from the special guests to the orchestra then the choir and surprises sprinkled throughout. This one came from the heart, London. Thank you for joining me on this journey at the @theo2london,” he wrote.
The performance marked another major milestone in his global career, which has seen him evolve from performing in small local venues to headlining some of the world’s most prestigious stages. Speaking ahead of the show in an interview with the BBC, Black Coffee explained that London has played a crucial role in shaping his international breakthrough and artistic identity.

He also revealed that performing at the main O2 Arena had long been a personal ambition, after previously playing smaller venues within the same complex. The show was carefully designed with London’s rich club culture in mind, blending his signature house sound with orchestral depth to create a unique live experience.
The production featured a full live orchestra accompanying his DJ set, shifting seamlessly between electronic rhythms and classical instrumentation. Fans were also treated to a surprise moment when Alicia Keys joined him on stage, adding to the emotional highlight of the night.
After the performance, Alicia Keys also shared her excitement on social media, praising the London crowd and the collaboration.

“London, I love you so much!! You always bring that fresh energyyyyyy. Moments like this is what it’s all about!!! I loved surprising you, London!! Big love to my brother @realblackcoffee for our very first performance of one of my favourite songs!!,” she wrote.
The sold-out show further cements Black Coffee’s status as one of South Africa’s most influential global music exports. Over the years, he has become a regular presence on international festival lineups, helping push Afropolitan House music onto the global stage and redefining the boundaries of electronic music performance.
