Long-distance bus company, Intercape, has again painted a distressing picture of ongoing violence.

Together with Golden Arrow Bus Services, it on Wednesday made presentations to Parliament’s police committee on security challenges.

The interprovincial bus service has been dealing with extortion-related attacks, mostly on the route between the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape.

Intercape on Wednesday started its presentation with a video, showing live footage of several attacks of gunmen firing shots at buses and drivers.

The company’s lawyer, Advocate Kate Hofmeyr, explained that the attacks began in 2022, after a meeting convened by taxi operators, who allegedly made threatening demands.

“It’s not only shocking. It’s unforgivable because all of that video footage and much more has been with the police for more than three years and there have been no arrests.”

Hofmeyr said that recordings from extortionists, photographic evidence of the meeting, vehicle registration numbers and bank account details had been handed to police.

“At the time that Intercape initially litigated this case, there had been 165 complaints lodged with the police. To date, there have been more than 200.”

MPs described the presentation as shocking and they stressed that no stone should be left unturned in Intercape’s quest for justice.
