Johannesburg’s City Power said that the suspension of prepaid meter conversions would allow it to thoroughly investigate financial and operational concerns raised by customers.

All prepaid meter conversions scheduled between 27 August to 1 November have been suspended for now following customer complaints.

Some of the concerns raised involved discrepancies in some accounts which are not being accurately reflected on City Power’s systems after conversion.

The utility said its investigating team was expected to table its findings and recommendations in two months.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said this was a temporary measure to allow for the tightening of controls, and to ensure that conversions were done correctly going forward.

The suspension does not affect existing prepaid or postpaid customers.
