Department of Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Ronald Lamola says more than 28 000 DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) reports on sexual offences have been processed since October last year. This has been revealed in the department’s report for the 2022-2023 financial year. The report has been tabled in Parliament.

Lamola says sexual violence, gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa are unacceptable. He says the DNA Project which has collaborated with the police services has been able to ensure that sexual offence matters are resolved faster.

Lamola says 28 110 DNA reports have been processed since October last year. The Minister says the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is committed to dealing with such cases vigorously. He added that the high conviction rate of 74.8% is a demonstration of the commitment to give justice to victims of sexual offences and Gender-based Violence.
