Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie said, although he believes his suspended deputy, Kenny Kunene, to be innocent of any connection to murder-accused Katiso Molefe, he has to be investigated.
The party was due to sign off on an investigation with a yet-to-be-named law firm on Thursday, to investigate the circumstances of Kunene’s presence at Molefe’s house last month when the police swooped in to arrest Molefe.
Kunene has since resigned as a Joburg City councillor and replaced with PA newcomer, Liam Jacobs.

McKenzie has described the past 14 days among the worst of his life, following the deaths of several prominent party members.
Mckenzie said taking action against Kunene, someone he regards as his brother and confidante, has been especially trying.
“It hurts me, what’s happening to him. It hurts me that it’s happening at my hand. It hurt me a lot. But right is right. I must treat Kenny Kunene like I would treat any other patriot. I cannot because he’s Kenny Kunene, treat him differently.”
In a video message to supporters, McKenzie said he will be transparent about the investigation and name the firm who will probe Kunene’s alleged links to Molefe – who is believed to be a mastermind behind the hits on at least two musicians – Oupa Sefoka known as DJ Sumbody and DJ Vinto, whose real name is Hector Buthelezi.

Mckenzie said Kunene is already prepared to deliver his version of events to investigators.
“I know he’s innocent, but he must be investigated. I personally believe he shouldn’t have been there.”
Kunene claims he had escorted a journalist to Molefe’s house when the police arrived.
