Building under renovation for student accommodation catches fire

Building under renovation for student accommodation catches fire in Sunnyside! A two-storey building in Sunnyside, Tshwane, which was undergoing renovations to be converted into student accommodation, suffered extensive damage after a massive fire broke out late Sunday night.

Swift Response from Emergency Services

Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni, spokesperson for Tshwane Emergency Services, confirmed that firefighters responded quickly to the emergency.

“We received the call shortly after 11 p.m. on Sunday. On arrival, firefighters were met with a raging inferno spreading rapidly between rooms divided by thin partition walls,” Mnguni said.

Emergency responders immediately implemented incident command to coordinate the firefighting operations. Their focus was to contain the fire and protect surrounding buildings.

Extent of the Damage

Despite the fire’s intensity, the swift and well-coordinated actions of the emergency services limited the damage.

“Only eight rooms and two hallways were affected by the blaze,” Mnguni reported.

Firefighters also managed to prevent the flames from spreading to a nearby building that was at risk of exposure to the fire.

By the time emergency personnel left the scene at around 3 a.m. on Monday, they had ensured the fire was completely extinguished, averting further destruction.

No Injuries or Fatalities Reported

Remarkably, no injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident. The building was unoccupied at the time, as it was still under renovation.

While the fire left parts of the structure heavily damaged, the quick response of emergency teams likely prevented a much worse outcome.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Authorities, including the Tshwane Metro Police Department and the South African Police Service (SAPS), were on the scene to assist with incident management and secure the area for investigations.

An official investigation is underway to establish the origins of the blaze.

Emergency Services Contact Information

Mnguni took the opportunity to remind the public of the importance of reporting emergencies promptly.

“To report any fire or rescue incident, you can call 107 toll-free or dial 012 358 6300/6400,” he stated.

Preventing Fire Hazards in Renovation Projects

This incident highlights the risks associated with buildings under renovation, especially those with temporary materials like thin partition walls that can exacerbate the spread of fire.

Authorities have urged property developers and contractors to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations during renovation projects, including:

  • Installing fire-resistant materials.
  • Conducting regular inspections.
  • Ensuring the availability of fire extinguishers and alarms.

Ongoing Efforts by Emergency Services

The swift response to the Sunnyside fire showcases the preparedness and efficiency of Tshwane Emergency Services. Mnguni commended the coordinated efforts of all involved, including the Metro Police and SAPS, who assisted in managing the scene.

Emergency services play a critical role in managing disasters and protecting lives and property. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining robust fire safety measures and ensuring rapid communication with emergency teams during a crisis.

A Cautionary Tale

While no lives were lost in the Sunnyside fire, the incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly fires can escalate, especially in structures under construction or renovation.

As investigations continue, authorities are likely to focus on identifying any lapses in safety protocols that may have contributed to the blaze. The outcome could lead to stricter enforcement of fire safety standards for buildings undergoing renovations in Tshwane and beyond.

This fire is a call to action for communities, contractors, and local governments to prioritize fire prevention and readiness, ensuring that similar incidents are mitigated in the future.
