City Power won’t respond to Mayibuye power outage until technician safety guaranteed! Johannesburg City Power said that it would not respond to the current power outage in Mayibuye, Midrand, until the safety of its technicians could be guaranteed by the local community.
This comes after a recent incident in which City Power staff were held hostage and threatened while conducting maintenance work in the area.

The power utility said it was not willing to risk the lives of its employees and would only resume operations once it was safe to do so.
City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, said that such incidents were becoming increasingly common.
“We have seen similar patterns of sabotage and violent resistance before, including in Riverpark, Alexandra in May 2025, where our teams were also attacked during a legal operation. In both instances, we were left with no choice but to suspend our services to prioritise the safety of our staff and safeguard our infrastructure.”
