Almost 3 million offences recorded in Cape Town including 49% increase in motorists jumping red lights! The City of Cape Town is urging road users to take personal responsibility for their behaviour, following a sharp rise in traffic violations over the past year.
The metro on Saturday released its annual traffic enforcement and fines statistics for the 12 months ending June 2025.
During that period, more than 2.7 million offences were recorded including a 49% increase in motorists jumping red lights along with spikes in general driving offences and overloading.

Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said they need the public to play their part.
“Our enforcement services are doing the work, as the millions of transgressions attest, but we have limited resources, and if we’re honest, much of what we deal with is the result of a lack of personal accountability”
Smith added that given the ongoing risks and incidents reported on the city’s roads every month, the statistics remain deeply concerning…
“Traffic enforcement is a highly contentious and emotive issue, and the biggest critics are often the biggest culprits. The argument about soft targets is old and frankly disrespectful to anyone who has experienced the tragic consequences that flow from the many transgressions on our roads,” said Smith.
