Matatiele, in the Eastern Cape, has been put in the spotlight for a lack of service delivery. Residents there have spent just over a decade without water. There are taps, but they’re dry.

Discussion | Matatiele multimillion-rand sports ground shocker Hundreds of millions were spent on the Fobane Water Scheme back in 2010 but today, the community remains thirsty. They say they have to share water with livestock. Water is running in most villages,” he said while admitting that vandalism has been a problem.

“It’s only two villages that do not have running water. The rest of the villages do have infrastructure and there is water in most of the five villages in that ward. It is what the councillor said that vandalism affects the smooth running or provision of water in those areas.

“I cannot confirm and say the water will be running for 24-hours. If there is a pipe blast, it will affect the issue of having running water in those areas but of the seven villages in Ward 23, five of them do have proper infrastructure and the water is running. Executive Mayor of the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, Polelo Mohale said the areas are affected by vandalism but insists there is water and operational infrastructure.
